Weekly Update: 25/06/2021

Hey folks,

I hope you are all doing well and are keeping safe!

Hard to believe we are almost into July and it feels like this year is flying!

My time now is being spent helping prepare the University for the next year and I have been attending many meetings and development workshops in order to provide an input into improving the student experience for next year and dealing with the issues that matter most to students.

Grades are also being released via e-vision and most students I have spoken to now have theirs, so please feel free to log in and check to see if yours are up.

I have not been dealing with many student issues as we are now near the end of term but if you do have anything you would like me to look into, please get in touch! I am still here for another month or so and I am happy to assist.

My work contact e-mail is: Sydney.Cooper@wlv.ac.uk

Look after yourselves and stay safe

Kind Regards,

Syd

Weekly Update 13/04/2021

Hey Folks,

I hope you are all doing well and had a relaxing Easter break - I myself did and was very productive doing work in the garden. I have now built an archway, painted it, laid new turf, bought some plants and rented a skip to get rid of some of the junk. A long overdue job indeed! Whilst it certainly looks nice, I have unfortunately been having to enjoy the view from inside as the weather hasn't exactly been ideal lately especially with the snow! Fingers crossed that this improves as I am looking forward to the first barbecue of the year!

Today has been my first day back after Easter break and I wanted to provide you with a quick update on what I have been up to:

  • I have read through and checked my latest emails relating to student issues and I am now all caught up on these.

  • I have read through the latest Coronavirus updates from the University ready to pass this information onto students as and where necessary.

  • I have contacted the Course Rep. WhatsApp group that I am in to check in with the Reps and see if there is anything I can help with. I have also made them aware I am now back in the office and am able to assist with any enquiries.

  • I have received an enquiry from a student regarding extensions and course re-starting. Identified as a priority and forwarded to student services who are now looking into actioning this.

  • I have replied to the APP survey which looks into student welfare during the Pandemic. This feedback will likely be taken forward to tailor future responses and support programmes for students.

  • I have accepted various meeting invitations.

  • I have contacted the head of SSHIPS to advise that I am now back in the office after Easter if there is anything that needs looking into.

And that's it for today's update folks!

Weekly Update 23/03/2021

Hey Folks,

I hope you are all doing well and are keeping safe! Today marks a year since the U.K went into the first National Lockdown. There will be a minute's silence at 12:00 Midday which I would all encourage you to participate in. I myself shall be doing this and reflecting on the hardships of the past year as well as honouring and remembering all those we have lost during the pandemic. I think as a nation (as well as students) that we have done exceptionally well to come this far and I believe that it has made us stronger as human beings. Although it may not feel like it lately, I believe that when we look back on this in a few years time, we will recognise that it has taught us how to adapt and grow as human beings.

If you do feel that things are getting to you with everything going on, please don't feel like you have to endure this alone. The University offer Wellbeing support and further information is available here: https://www.wlv.ac.uk/current-students/student-support/student-support-and-wellbeing-ssw/

  • I have contacted the Course Rep. WhatsApp group that I am in to check in with the reps and see if there is anything I can help with.

  • I have spoken to a student yesterday who wishes to change their current career choice once they have graduated. I have informed them that the University offers a career advice service which I have provided them the website page  link to and advised that they can offer a consultation via conference call or e-mail.

Weekly Update 02/03/2021

Hey Folks!

Hope you're all doing well. Can't believe it's March already! At least the winter is now over (officially anyway!) and we got to enjoy what was hopefully a sneak preview of the future weather this weekend just gone. I went for a nice long walk in my local park and golf course which has a cross country running trail. Didn't get too much of a chance to work on my tan unfortunately, but it was nice to enjoy the fresh air and clear my head. Something which I would definitely reccomend if you are feeling a bit down and stuck in. It can do the body and mind wonders just getting out of the house even for 10 minutes to get the legs moving and get some fresh air.

I have been working again today and wanted to provide you all with a quick update:

  • I have read through and checked my latest emails regarding any student issues and I am now all caught up on these.

  • I have read through the latest Coronavirus updates from the University ready to pass this information onto students as and where necessary.

  • I have checked through the Microsoft Teams chat channel for any messages relating to student issues. I am now all caught up on this. I have also posted a message on here making Course Reps. Aware that elections will soon be opening. I have posted a link to the Union’s election page and requested that they push this out to students making them aware. If you would like more information about elections, please see this link: https://www.wolvesunion.org/vote/

  • I have contacted some of the various Student WhatsApp groups I am a member of to make students aware that I am working today and available to assist if anyone has any issues or concerns. I have heard nothing as of yet and have not been made aware of any issues.

  • I have contacted the Course Rep. WhatsApp group that I am in to check in with the Reps and see if there is anything I can help with.

  • I have spoken to a student who has been struggling with an assignment. I have advised them to contact their module tutor via e-mail with any questions. I have also mentioned that they can probably arrange for a phone/video call with them if this is easier. I have offered further assistance if required.

  • I have checked in with a student I have helped previously to see if they are getting on okay. They are now doing well I am pleased to report. I have advised them should they require any further assistance to give us a shout and get into contact so I can provide support.

  • I have checked in with a fellow School Rep. to see if she needs any assistance with student engagement. Recently I gave them some suggestions which they are now looking at, namely setting up a Course Rep WhatsApp Group.

  • I have updated my School Rep. Log.

  • I have updated my blog.

And that's it for today's update! If you need to contact me or just want to reach out for a chat, my contact e-mail is: Sydney.Cooper@wlv.ac.uk.

Stay safe everyone and take care!

Kind Regards,

Syd

Weekly Update 26/02/2021

Hey folks!

I hope you are all keeping well and are staying safe! I woke up this morning to cold weather and ice - it seems the back end of winter is still trying to stick around! Hopefully as the months progress, things will get warmer and with restrictions eased, we will be able to enjoy the warm weather more. I am looking forward to going out for walks with the sun shining brightly!

Weekly Update 23/02/2021

Hey Folks,

I hope you are all doing well and are keeping safe. We have recently received an update from the Government and now have a roadmap out of the Lockdown. This is definitely positive news and more and more people are getting vaccinated every day - we now have something to work towards. I have already arranged my haircut so fingers crossed things go to plan!

I have also been working today and wanted to provide you all with an update on what I have been doing:

  • I have read through and checked my latest emails relating to student issues and I am now all caught up on these.

  • I have read through the latest Coronavirus updates from the University ready to pass this information onto students as and where necessary.

  • I have checked through the Microsoft Teams chat channel for any messages relating to student issues. I am now all caught up on this.

  • I have contacted some of the various Student WhatsApp groups I am a member of to make students aware that I am working today and available to assist if anyone has any issues or concerns. I have heard nothing as of yet and have not been made aware of any issues or concerns - no news is good news!

  • I have contacted the Course Rep. WhatsApp group that I am in to check in with the reps and see if there is anything I can help with. I am still currently awaiting replies from them.

  • I have posted a message in the Student Voice Microsoft Teams Chat checking in with the Course Reps. and also making them aware of the Pandemic Hardship Fund (I have posted the link). I have requested that Course Reps. push this out to students so that they can get some assistance should they require. I have also posted my contact e-mail and asked if they identify any students who do need support to let me know. Further details can be found here if you would like to apply or know more: https://www.wlv.ac.uk/apply/funding-costs-fees-and-support/financial-support/dennis-turner-opportunity-fund/

  • I have received a scam e-mail claiming that I need to click a link otherwise my e-mail account will be shut down. Please be aware of this and do not click any links from suspect e-mails. Due to the pandemic, online fraud and scams have spiked massively, so pleaase exercise caution when viewing e-mails. If it looks suspect, it probably is.

  • I have started to type up my FASEC (Previously FAEC) report ready for the upcoming meeting. If you have anything you would like me to raise or take to the meeting, please let me know. I shall leave my contact e-mail below as per usual.

  • I have checked in with a few students who I have assisted over the past few weeks to see how they are getting on and if there is anything else I can assist with. No issues.

  • I have spoken to a HND student on my course. After speaking to another HND student recently, it was stated that HND students may be finding it difficult this year as this is the only year of University they are doing which is all remote. I have reached out to check in and see if I can assist.

And that's it for today's update, folks!

Please feel free to reach out if you require any assistance or would just like to chat and say hello. My contact e-mail is: Sydney.Cooper@wlv.ac.uk.

Take care everyone and please stay safe!

Kind Regards,

Syd
