Barmouth developed as one of the major ship building centres in Wales during the 18th & 19th centuries. The harbour still has a small fishing industry but is mainly used by pleasure craft.

The estuary is home to Merioneth Yacht Club. Lining the edge of the harbour are cafes, ice-cream parlours and a pub with pleasant gardens to sit out in and watch the world go by.

Celebrate the end of the academic year with a day trip to one of the UK's iconic seaside towns.  If the weather is nice you can slip off your shoes and paddle through the surf on Barmouth's Blue Flag beach, which is never overcroweded, and soak up the vintage seaside atmosphere of candy floss and donkey rides. If you want a quieter space for your picnic and to be closer to the sea (weather permitting), then venture further along the one-mile long promenade perhaps using the land train which runs the length of the promenade.
