Overview

The dynamo British percussionist Joby Burgess (whose credits include Peter Gabriel, Max Richter and Eric Whitacre), is joined by sound designer Matthew Fairclough and visual artist Kathy Hinde, as Powerplant present a lavish audio feast where the worlds of minimalism and electronica collide.

Powerplant rework two classics by American minimalist Steve Reich using live tape loops and xylosynth, alongside a new version of Arvo Pärt’s evergreen Fratres for the 9ft tall Capone-era Aluminium Harp. London based composers and producers Gabriel Prokofiev and Max de Wardener take influence from found sounds and Michael Haneke’s film The Piano Teacher, in powerful works using African soda bottles and Franz Schubert’s Winterreise.

Called a ‘brilliant musical scientist’ Montreal based Nicole Lizée’s new work The Filthy Fifteen is a quasi documentary on censorship in the Rock ‘n’ Roll industry and the Parents Music Resource Centre.

Famed for their visually innovative, multi-media performances, Powerplant operate at the forefront of the alt-classical scene, presenting percussion led performances in surround sound with original video.
