Building a better student community together.
Re-elect Oluwafunbi Babatunde
It has been a privilege to serve at the student union over the past year. The challenges I’ve faced has fuelled my determination to foster a stronger student community with great support system. However, my commitment to fostering belonging, supportive and safe university environment drives my passion to be re-elected for this role.
Key achievements as the current VP Community entails the following:
- Expanded the range of societies leading to enhanced student engagement.
- Assisted student with accommodation inquiries and issues such as helping students navigate the process of finding suitable accommodation options, addressing maintenance issues in the university accommodation, and facilitating communication between students and staffs.
- Addressed the cost-of-living crisis within the student community through various events aimed at alleviating the situation such as clothe swap, food bags etc.
- Collaborated with the University to tackle student concerns such as finance, transport and identify sustainable solutions while ensuring the solutions are student friendly.
- Advocated for student voices in crucial meetings and subcommittees, ensuring their voices are validated.
I am proud of the ongoing development and these achievements has provided insights that will contribute to the success of my proposed goals and if elected I will persist in fostering:
Student Community Engagement:
Establish regular meetings across all campuses to gather input from students, ensuring their voices shape decisions.
Foster collaboration between our diverse student groups, promote and support societal activities to increase sense of belonging amongst the student community.
Student Well-being and welfare:
Advocate for increased access to wellbeing services, initiate and promote wellbeing campaigns.
Implement initiatives to reduce the stigma around mental health issues and other wellbeing concerns.
Initiate the use of confidential reporting system for incidents related to student well-being and safety.
Collaborate with university, council, and local charities to address cost of living crisis, financial crisis and explore options to tackle these concerns.
Work with the university to explore affordable housing options for students and address any accommodation concerns.
Student Opportunities:
Partnering with university career services, local businesses, start-ups, and organizations to provide students with access to volunteering, internships, and career development opportunities, making valuable connections and earning transferable skills in their respective fields.
Ensure that student programs are inclusive and considerate of different backgrounds and perspectives.
Communication and Transparency:
Maintain open lines of communication between the student body and the Student Union.
Ensure transparency in decision-making processes and regularly update students on relevant matters.
I am dedicated to creating a campus environment where every student feels safe, heard, valued, and supported. Together, let's build a university community that cares for one another, and collectively works towards a brighter future.
