Working Together for an inclusive Community

My name is Oluwafunbi, and I am contesting to be elected as Vice President community, I am a master’s student currently studying Finance and Accounting. Over the past years, I have held leadership position which includes Course rep, and the Literature society secretary during my BSc. Having studied the job description and role, I believe I have the skills, quality and attributes to be elected to this role to help our University and Union achieve her aim.

As I continue to grow and learn, what is increasingly evident is the importance of a community and the value and impact it can have on engagement and experience of students in higher education. It’s a place to grow, learn and most importantly a place to help others achieve their goals and full potential, I aim to build a community where the unheard voices are heard in our prestigious University. So, I use this opportunity to announce my candidacy for VP COMMUNITY AND WELFARE.

As your VP Community officer, I intend to do the following:

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

We all have minds that needs to be cared for. Our wellbeing is affected by all aspects of our lives which in turn affects how we experience live. Creating awareness will help us recognise signs and symptoms and help us in finding lasting solutions to thrive.

INCLUSIVE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY (INTERNATIONAL WEEEK)

As an international student, I understand the value of having people around you who can help you adjust to new environment. My goal is to foster a community that provides a strong and stable foundation to build upon for international students from different demographics at this prestigious University. There is strength in diversity and the only way we can grow and move forward is TOGETHER.

BRIDGE ACADEMIC AND EMPLOYMENT GAP

Whatever gap that has existed between students and the job market after and even during school, it is my goal that through workshops, seminars, webinars and more to facilitate opportunities that can bridge that gap and integrate students properly into the job market.

IMPROVE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND VALIDATE VOICE OF LIBERATION GROUPS

I aim to validate voice of every liberation group and society in our university by increasing the online and physical presence of all liberation groups in our campus. Create more academic and extra curriculum activities for different types of students.

PARKING LOT

I will lobby the University to ensure they build an ultramodern and affordable parking for both students and staff.

What I hope to achieve if elected.

  • Emphasize a sense of welfare and community in the recruitment of new staff members.
  • Quarterly feedback from students on the performance of Sabbs and Union itself.
  • University wide awareness of our international community and other liberation groups.
  • Tackle recent racial and racist abuse against students to ensure they are in a protected environment.
  • Make guaranteed accommodation scheme clearer to freshers, structuring it by budget/payment (monthly).
