Student Community Pantry

Supporting students with food and essentials when they need it most.

We are excited to announce the launch of the Student Community Pantry at Wolverhampton Students’ Union.

Created in response to student feedback, growing concerns around the cost of living, and the increasing pressure many students are facing, the pantry has been developed to provide practical support to students who may need a helping hand.

No judgement. No shame. Just support when you need it.

What is the Student Community Pantry?

The Student Community Pantry provides free access to food and essential items for University of Wolverhampton students who need support.

The pantry has been created to help students who may be affected by food poverty, financial pressure, cost of living challenges, or unexpected hardship.

Items available may include:

Pasta
Rice
Tinned food
Sauces
Cereal
Snacks
Toiletries
Hygiene products

Stock will vary depending on availability, but we aim to provide useful items that can help students get through the week.

Who is the pantry for?

The pantry is available to University of Wolverhampton students who need support.

You do not need to be in crisis to ask for help. Students may use the pantry for lots of different reasons, including:

Struggling with food costs
Waiting for student finance, wages or other payments
Facing an unexpected bill or emergency cost
Supporting family or dependants
Experiencing financial pressure
Needing short term food or hygiene support

We understand that asking for help can feel difficult, but this support exists for students. There is no shame in using it.

How the pantry works

The Student Community Pantry is a managed support service. This means students can access items through the Students’ Union, rather than helping themselves directly.

This helps us make sure the pantry is used fairly, stocked responsibly and able to support as many students as possible.

Walk in support

If you need short term support, visit the Students’ Union Welcome Desk and speak to a member of staff.

Students can take up to 5 items.

Booked support through the Advice Centre

Students who need additional support can book an appointment with the SU Advice Centre.

Students may be able to access up to 10 items.

Repeat use and ongoing support

We understand that some students may need support more than once.

If you need to use the pantry regularly, or if we feel you may benefit from further support, we may ask you to book an appointment with the SU Advice Centre.

This is not to make things difficult. It is to help us understand your situation and connect you with wider support that may be available.

What to expect when you visit

We want the process to feel simple, respectful and discreet.

When you visit, a member of staff may ask you a few basic questions and may ask for your student ID or student number.

This helps us monitor use of the service, understand demand, and make sure we can continue supporting students effectively. Your information will be handled sensitively.

More than food support

The Student Community Pantry is part of wider support available through Wolverhampton Students’ Union.

If you are regularly struggling with money, food, housing, student finance or unexpected costs, we strongly encourage you to speak to the SU Advice Centre.

Supporting the Student Community Pantry

The Student Community Pantry has been created to support students in times of need, but its success will rely on the goodwill of those who are able to help sustain it.

If you are in a position to do so, we welcome donations of food, toiletries, hygiene products and everyday essentials to help keep the pantry stocked for students who need support.

Every donation, big or small, helps us continue providing practical support to students facing financial difficulty, food poverty, cost of living pressures or unexpected hardship.

You can check out our donation list to see which items are most useful and currently needed.

Community, care and practical action

Whether you need support yourself, know someone who may benefit, or are in a position to donate, the Student Community Pantry is about supporting students through the difficult moments, not just the easy ones.
