How will a Union position benefit me?

If you are looking for a full time job that gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of students at the University Of Wolverhampton, then becoming a student officer gives you just that!

The Student Officers are at the top of the student leadership ladder, working full time for a year (July to July) and receive £20,162 to represent students at every level of decision-making in the university, to the local community and on national campaigns. Student Officers lead the political direction of Wolverhampton Students’ Union and become the face of the organisation. Campaigning on behalf of students to ensure positive changes on anything that affects student life. There’s a lot of meetings involved – but you’d be making change in every one, sometimes at the most senior level of the University.

As this is a full time role you will either need to take a sabbatical (during your studies) or as a graduate opportunity (after your studies).

If running for a position is not for you, then make sure you vote – have your say and make sure what matters to you is addressed by WolvesSU and the University.

A year as a Students' Union (SU) Officer has the potential to be the most intense, exciting, enlightening year and there are loads of ways it can benefit you:

  • Personal development. With rising numbers of graduates, the experience really can help you stand out from the crowd. It is GREAT for your CV.

  • It broadens your horizons and gives you insight into potential career paths - there is so much going on within the SU.

  • You can have a direct impact on the experiences of other students at the University and make things better for your peers. Leave a legacy!

  • The experiences you will get will be hugely varied and useful - from team work, to strategic planning, to budgets, to marketing and communications, to service development.

  • You will improve in many areas - communication, time management, planning, research, attending committees etc (all the things employers are looking for).

  • Your network of contacts will grow and grow and you will meet loads of new people.

  • It's massively good fun and there is rarely a dull moment!
