"A PRESTIGIOUS SOCIETY FOR INTELLECTUAL PEOPLE THAT UPHOLDS THE PRINCIPAL OF FREE SPEECH"
Think. Speak. Inspire.
The Debate Society at the University of Wolverhampton is a space for students who are passionate about ideas, discussion, and public speaking. Whether you’re a seasoned debater or completely new to it, our society helps you build confidence, sharpen your communication skills, and explore global and ethical issues through structured debate and dialogue.
Our society focuses on personal growth, intellectual curiosity, and community engagement. Members take part in a variety of activities including:
Weekly Debates – Engage in lively discussions on current events, ethics, law, politics, and culture.
Workshops & Training – Learn debate formats such as British Parliamentary and Lincoln-Douglas, and develop persuasive speaking and argumentation skills.
Public Events & Competitions – Take part in “Wolves Speak” internal tournaments, inter-university debates, and university-wide public debates featuring guest speakers.
Social & Networking Events – Connect with fellow students, alumni, and professionals through mixers, panel discussions, and friendly socials.
Awards & Recognition – Celebrate achievements with certificates, prizes, and shields for standout debaters and society contributors.
Promote Public Speaking & Confidence Help students develop strong communication skills and the confidence to speak clearly and persuasively in any setting.
Encourage Critical Thinking & Academic Enrichment Inspire open-mindedness and intellectual curiosity through debate on contemporary and philosophical issues.
Build a Vibrant Debate Community Unite students across disciplines who share a passion for ideas, respectful discourse, and civic engagement.
Develop Future Leaders Provide opportunities for teamwork, leadership, and professional development through active participation and competitions.
In our first year, the Debate Society will focus on building a strong foundation — establishing our identity, logo, and online presence, and creating a welcoming space for new members. We’ll host a major inaugural event featuring professors and guest speakers, set up membership drives and promotional desks, and introduce a dress code (black blazers with the society logo) to represent the professionalism and prestige of our society.
Join us to think critically, speak confidently, and inspire change — one debate at a time.
