Nearly 2000 signed Christmas cards delivered to Paul Uppal.
In response to the recent student activity across the country on the continued fight against rising tuition fees, today your Students' Union personally delivered just under two thousand Christmas cards to local MP Mr. Paul Uppal. These Christmas cards were collected over the past few weeks and contained a personal message form the students of University of Wolverhampton, stating our opposition to the savage cuts to Higher Education Funding and tuition fee increases of up to £9000 per year.
Mr Uppal is the Conservative MP for Wolverhampton South West and represents a large proportion of the 23,000 students who attend this university.
Ken Harris an Alex Blower grilled Mr Uppal on a number of issues on H.E. funding.
Mr Uppal failed to give a response when asked about the need to increase tuition fees to £9000 a year given that £7000 fees would cover all teaching grant cuts.
When asked how he would be voting on December 9th, Mr Uppal stated that his position had not changed and that he will still be voting in favour of higher tuition fees. We pointed out that such a decision would be detrimental to future students and asked if he would reconsider his position, to this he flatly refused.
We ended the meeting by making clear to Mr Uppal that the students of Wolverhampton would not be voting for him in the next General Election.
