Many other university's have a reading week. Usually aligned with the school holidays to help parent learners with the cost of childcare.

They are also very important for mental health and can help improve grades.

6:22pm on 26 Jan 19 Connor, the week off that we have is a semester break and since exams are the week before i feel it is justified for people to use it as a break as the 3 months before were used to learn content and revise. As far as mental health goes this break is well needed as working for extended periods of time can have a major impact in worsening the mental health of students. Personally i feel having a longer semester break would be more useful even if it means the academic year finishing a little bit later.

10:02am on 16 Nov 18 As Phoebe says you don't get a Christmas or Easter as you are revising. By the time you get a week off between semester 1 and semester 2 you are exhausted. As a parent, my kids are often on school holidays in revision week making it extra difficult to fit exam revision in. So you go from the end of September right through to May with only a week off. I'd rather we start the academic calendar a week earlier and finish a week later and have a short break mid-semester, to read, catch up, take a mental break.

6:41pm on 15 Nov 18 I just think that exams should be before the christmas break, because at the moment, we don't get a break!

12:27pm on 15 Nov 18 Isn't the week between Sem1 and 2 meant to be a reading week? We already only have about 24 teaching weeks to the academic year anyway, I'd much rather we actually get our money's worth rather than having a week where only a minority would actually use this week effectively to read up on course content.
