ANGEL MORPHEW (Agents 4 Change)

Together we can create a positive inclusive community that all students can integrate and feel part of the progressive change in our universities culture.

My name is Angel Morphew and I’m a final year Sociology student. I currently work part-time as a Specialist Mentor; I have taught Black History Month workshops and Equality and Diversity rights modules to students at a college. My experience as a student, member of the board of trustees, coupled with my mixed heritage have driven my passion towards equality and inclusivity. I always strive towards making everyone’s opinion heard and considered to create an inclusive environment. Consequently, I have written my manifesto based on the feedback I received from students.

  • ZERO-TOLERANCE TOWARDS DISCRIMINATION: For the SU and university to provide better training, awareness and policies for staff and students on race, gender, religion, disability and sexuality. To create an inclusive culture and stance against discrimination on campus/remote.
  • HIDDEN COST CAMPAIGN: To tackle the barriers that additional costs present to students on various courses. For example, additional materials, mandatory trips and digital poverty (making the current laptop loan scheme more effective). In regards to supporting with materials and resources, this will be in the form of credits/vouchers. I strongly believe that students need to start university on a level playing field and this project will be the first steps in ensuring that happens.
  • MENTAL-HEALTH: The pandemic has highlighted the importance of mental health. I will campaign for more effective support for students, especially those who are in urgent need. Working closely with other officers to provide students with the helpline service and adequate support.
  • INCLUSIVE FINANCIAL SUPPORT: To create a more inclusive financial support system by improving emergency fund support for EU/Non-EU students, disabled students and students going through financial hardships.
  • BAME ATTAINMENT GAP: Ensure BAME students benefit from equal opportunities in higher education, for example scholarships into masters and PhD's. Diversify the student societies, members and improve inclusivity.
  • DECOLONISATION: Raising awareness and working with students to breakdown systematic barriers in education, which I am currently already supporting as a SU trustee through a decolonisation project.
  • TIMETABLING: To be inclusive and accommodate International students, students with care responsibilities and other commitments.

My aspiration is to create a positive inclusive community that all students can integrate and feel part of the progressive change in our universities culture.
