Foreword from The Dean of Students
Thank you for getting involved in our Student Representative system – the Student Voice. The University is a community of learners, and students are active participants in the teaching and learning experience. As such, you have an important perspective on how the University operates and by “listening to the student voice” we are continually working to make improvements to the overall student experience.
Student representatives play a crucial role in ensuring that students’ opinions are heard. By engaging with the Students’ Union, active participation on Course Committees, Student/Staff liaison groups and School Councils, representatives are able to tell us what we are doing well and where we could be doing better.
Its not always glamorous - but it is good experience!
Student Reps develop skills that could be valuable in any future career; the art of negotiation, communication, analysis and feedback – all skills that employers are looking for in an increasingly competitive job market. Together with the Students’ Union, the University offers representatives the opportunity to record your personal commitment and experience through the volunteering certification scheme and to develop and sell your skills through training provided by the Careers & Employment Services. The initial training provided by the Students’ Union is an invaluable start to this experience and I would urge you to participate and engage fully.
Your Opinions Make A Difference - they really do!
The University is undergoing a period of significant change - refocusing our undergraduate curriculum to ensure that our courses and awards are fit for the future – and that our graduates stand out from the crowd. Your participation as a student representative is vital to that process and we will be listening to the student voice throughout. But for it to work you have to get involved, you have to ask questions and attend meetings, you have to talk to your peer group and find out what they are thinking. We also ask that you feedback to your peers about what is happening and what we are doing in respect of their comments, opinions and suggestions.
So, thank you in advance for that effort - it is much appreciated and valued across the University. You can contact me directly with your opinions and suggestions at – opinions@wlv.ac.uk - Have a good year and thanks again.
