You can gain 15 credits at level 2 by taking the elective module FD2000 Developing Personal and Professional Skills through Student Representation. The module is validated by the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences (HLSS).
You need to be involved as a student representative on Students' Union, University or School Committees.
This module has been designed to enable those students who have an interest in student representation to reflect on and evaluate the communication processes involved. The module provides the context for students to acquire and develop the knowledge and skills to underpin their role within the University and Students' Union. An active interest in student matters and attendance at taught sessions and on agreed committees is essential for the successful completion of this module.
You will be introduced to a number of theoretical models as an aid to understanding organisational, interpersonal and group communications via a small number of lectures and workshops.
You will be asked to reflect on how these models, and any others identified through further reading, might develop your understanding of how people function in organizations. You will also be asked to consider how your own communication and negotiation skills might be developed as a student representative.
Lectures/workshops provide the opportunity for you to exchange ideas with other representatives. Throughout the module, in your own time, you will be expected to attend School/University meetings, undertake additional reading and keep a detailed Learning Log.
This will form the basis of the evidence used in the evaluative report. Towards the end of the module you will be introduced to the conventions of report writing. Many of the skills you develop will be useful when you enter employment or undertake further study.
There is one component of assessment, comprising 2 elements.
Element 1: the production of a Personal Learning Log that records the theory and practice of student representation and identifies areas for future development or improvement. This may include Students' Union meeting feedback sheets, term reports, questionnaires, University responses to complaints, suggestions, etc. Pass/fail
Element 2: the production of a word-processed evaluative report. 100% weighting.
For elected Students' Union School Representatives, attendance at School Quality Enhancement Committees, School Boards and the Students' Union Student Representation Council is essential. Attendance at any other committees to which the representative is elected is desirable.
For other student Representatives a minimum attendance at Staff/Student Liaison Meetings is essential. Please consult your Student Liaison Officer to find out about committee schedules.
You will need to register for this module via e:vision. If you experience problems with this system, please go to Registry in MT Block. It is advisable to consult with your academic counsellor for your pathway, as this module may replace a module you are currently registered for.
