The Aikido Club is one of the longest running clubs in the university. Aikido is a Japanese martial art which involves some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu.
Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.
The club is open to anyone of any ability and students work towards gradings throughout the year.
The Aikido Club trains at City Campus.
Tuesdays 5-7pm
Thursdays 5-7pm
Transport to City Campus is available on the free university inter-site bus.
For your first session it is advisable to wear sports-style clothing (for example, track suit bottoms & t-shirt). Please do not wear jeans.
Training is free, as long as you have a Student Sports Card.
Full instruction is provided at each session by a qualified instructor, Sensai Vince Leadbeatter.
Both the instructor and the club are affiliated to the Aikido Fellowship (link below).
