A stamp in your passport will tell you if you need to register. If you are a national of the Commonwealth or intend to stay in the UK for less than six months then you will not usually be required to register with the police.
Students have to register at the nearest police station dealing with Overseas Visitors Registrations.

No appointment is necessary at either police station but students attending Telford police station should go individually or in a group no larger than two.
The student must appear in person with two passport sized photographs, a letter from the University or their enrolment form, their passport, proof of address in the UK and the application which is available from the Advice & Support Centre. The form needs to be completed before you go to the police station. The fee is £34.00 at the time of writing. It is very important that you register with the Police within seven days of arrival.
If any of your personal details such as name or address, change during your studies, you must attend the Overseas Visitors section again and have the amendments made on your Police Registration Certificate.
