
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Please be very aware that all tenancy agreements, whether made with the University for Halls accommodation, or with a private landlord, are LEGALLY BINDING from the date of signing until the tenancy end date as stated on the agreement (with Halls in particular, you will see this stated plainly on the front page of the contract).
If you find yourself in financial difficulty and unable to pay the rent at any time during the tenancy period, this will not usually be seen as sufficient reason for early release from contract. Therefore, be very careful when signing any document.
Read and re-read it carefully, making sure that something you might think is simply a booking form or "Application", does not in fact bind you to the terms of the contract.
Never sign anything you think you might not be able to see through to the end.
Landlords do and will use the full force of the law to pursue you for outstanding rent, something that can be very time-consuming, stressful, and expensive.
HALLS
With Halls contracts in particular, it is important to remember you will not have the opportunity to quit the tenancy during the academic year. The University does have the power to withdraw services from you until a debt has been paid.
This could mean preventing you from using library facilities, stopping you going on work placements, stopping you from taking exams and preventing you from collecting exam results or even graduating!
If you find yourself in financial difficulty during the academic year, come and see an adviser at the Advice and Support Centre BEFORE the situation gets out of hand and always keep in mind that making any payment is better than making none!
