If you live in rented accommodation or share with other people, there is a higher chance you could have a fire.
A smoke alarm is a warning device that detects smoke at the eariest stages of a fire. This gives you vital extra time to escape.
If your property is Accredited by the University, it will already have interlinked smoke alarms (which aren't reliant on batteries) and the furniture in the property will meet up to current fire safety standards.
BE PREPARED
Spend a few minutes thinking about how you would get out if there was a fire. It might be an idea to pin up a basic plan on the wall, especially if people often drop in or come to stay.

INSURANCE
You may think insurance is an extravagance you can't afford whilst at University. However, with research revealing that the average student is taking over £4,200 worth of belongings with them to University (Endsleigh), it is vital to insure your possessions against fire, theft and even accidental damage.
Not sure of the value of your possessions?
Click here to use Endsleigh's student possessions calculator
to find out. You can also get an estimate of what you might be exected to pay for insuring your possessions. Compare that to the cost of replacing all your belongings - it may not seem as such an extravagance after all...
DON'T THINK IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO YOU - IT JUST MIGHT!
Below are some photographs taken from an Accredited student house fire in the Whitmore Reans area of the City.
The students were lucky to escape with their lives - but not with their possessions...and they weren't insured!
Click on the photos to really appreciate the true extent of this fire...then make sure it doesn't happen to you!
