Your LA will assess you for your student loan. Students will need to meet the basic residency requirement (three years ordinarily resident within the UK before the first day of academic year). Everyone is entitled to the first 75% of the loan, which is non-means tested. How much of the other 25% you receive will depend upon the income of your parents or you/your spouse if you are independent.
If you have previously studied in Higher Education you will not be eligible for the maintenance loan unless you are continuing your study's towards certain professional qualifications i.e. medical doctor, dentist, veterinary doctor or architect.
The maximum loans available in the academic year 08/09 including the 25%, which is means tested, are:
Students living away from home:
£4,625 (£4,280)*
For students living at home:
£3,580 (£3,235)*
*Figures in brackets = loan available in final year.
Part time Students
Both new and existing students can apply for a course grant of up to £255 towards travel, books and other course costs. A fee grant is also available. The maximum amount available to you will depend upon what percentage of a full-time course you are studying.
Entitlement to the grants will depend on your income and that of your husband, wife or partner.
Your LA will work out how much support you can get.
