Extensions

It is important that you plan your assessment well in advance. Remember, a deadline is the LAST day that the assessment is due in - you can hand it in well before that if you choose. Effective planning means that you should not have to apply for extensions unless it is an absolute emergency. Bear in mind that losing your work due to PC failure or failing to back up work on will rarely be enough to get you an extension. The same applies to minor illnesses such as colds - these should not prevent you from handing in work in good time. Upon completion of your degree, employers expect you to have, amongst others, planning, organisation and prioritising skills.

However, if you do experience a major last-minute problem, and the problem is short-term, you will need to fill in a Request for Extension Form (POG33). These are available from your Student Office or the Students' Union's Advice and Support Centre.

Requests for extensions must normally be made to your module leader, personal tutor or academic counsellor seven days before the assessment deadline. The maximum length of an extension is seven days, but this does not mean that you will automatically be granted a seven-day extension. It could be less, depending on your circumstances.

You will need to provide evidence that your circumstances merit an extension or else your claim is likely to be rejected. You should provide independent evidence (e.g. a doctor's note or letter from a counsellor) and supportive evidence (e.g. a personal statement from you or someone close to you). You should make adequate plans to allow for emergencies - for example, by not leaving assignments to the last minute.
