Consume Within

New app set to reduce food bills and put an end to communal kitchen arguments.

A new iPhone app has been launched to help students manage their food more effectively.

The “Consume Within” app, developed at the University of Wolverhampton, enables you to save money and reduce food waste by notifying you when opened produce is approaching the end of its useful life.

The app tracks the storage life of food items across three locations: the fridge, freezer and the cupboard and is suitable for monitoring shop bought food as well as home cooked meals.

For produce that is more difficult to identify, either because it’s stored in a generic food container or you have multiple packets of the same thing, there are the Consume Within stickers. These intelligent stickers enable you to create an individual identity for each stored item; so you know exactly what is in the pack and whether it is still suitable to eat. An added bonus for students that share a communal kitchen is that the app allows you to easily identify your own food.

The app is available for download from the iTunes App Store for £1.79 and should pay for itself inside a couple of weeks.

A free lite version is also available and the development team would really appreciate your reviews.
