Elections Regulations

As with any elections, there are rules that candidates and their supporters must abide by. The majority of these rules are contained in our elections bye-law, which candidates need to familiarise themselves with and brief their campaigns teams on.

In addition to our elections regulations included in our bye-laws, the Elections Committee set other regulations regarding candidate conduct and campaigning, including:

  • * Candidates may form 'slates' if they so wish. A 'slate' is where candidates run in groups and promote each other when asking students to vote for them.
  •
  • *Candidates need to inform Elections Committee in writing if they are running in a slate with one or more other candidates

*Under no circumstances can candidates vote on behalf of another student, whether electronically, on-line, or manually at ballot stations.  This may constitute a serious breach of elections regulations,as well as voter fraud, and could result in a candidate being excluded from the elections.

  • * Candidates may be held responsible for fellow slate members and campaigners
  •
  • * Candidates must seek approval from others (including fellow candidates who are
  •    slate members) before including their names, photos etc on their promotional
  •    materials.
  •
  • * Candidates may spend no more than £50/position on campaign materials. This must
  •    include budget allocated for pre-owned items, sponsorship etc.
  •
  • * Complaints and appeals regarding the elections must be submitted in writing to the Deputy Returning Officer, S.Williams3@wlv.ac.uk.  Deadline for all complaints is close of polls on Thurs 7th March @ 10pm.

*Candidates can't complain on behalf of other students.

  • * Lecture shouts may be used within candidates’ campaigns, with permission of
  •    lecturers.
  •
  • * If candidates are to use external contacts etc to promote their campaigns they
  •    must ensure the same opportunities are available for other candidates.
  •
  • * Students must produce valid student ID cards to vote at on-campus ballot stations.
  •
  • * Candidates may produce videos to be linked to their candidate page but these must
  •    be no longer than 1 minute in running length.
