If you are wondering what is happening about the strikes and why your lectures are on taking this action, take a look at this statement provided by Dr Jim Davis and Imeena Jefferies on behalf of UCU and UNISON. We hope that you will read this and make your own decision as to where you stand:
-
Dear students,
-
-
On Wednesday 30th November, members of staff at the University of Wolverhampton will be joining the national day of action organised by more than 15 trade unions across the country to defend public sector pensions. At the University, the two unions will be acting together: UNISON (for manual, technical and support staff) and UCU (University and Colleges Union, for academic and academic-related staff). Classes and services will be disrupted.

-
We are fully aware of the impact that this will have on you and your study. Our decision to strike was not taken lightly, and was the result of democratic ballots organised by both unions earlier this year. By taking this action, we are defending not only our members but also the rights of our future members including those of you who will, at the conclusion of your study, undertake employment in the public sector. We would like to make it clear that our action is directed solely at the government and their decision to degrade public sector pensions.

Raising awareness of the current situation, the University of Wolverhampton Student Union organised a debate on 10th November during which staff and students were given an opportunity to put forward their opinions and discuss the imminent action. In furtherance to this successful event, we would like to invite students to visit our picket lines on 30th November from 7 am, and join in the rally organised by local unions. We will gather outside the Civic Centre at 11 am, and also in Birmingham (National Indoor Arena on Centenary square) from 12.30 pm.

Finally, you should know that following the suggestion by UCU and UNISON, our Vice-Chancellor has agreed that 100% of money deducted from the salary of our members for striking will be given to our University’s student hardship fund.
