Green Week
As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce waste, the Students’ Union will be working with the University to hold a Green Week, between Monday 7th – Friday 11th February.
So come on, do your bit! Get involved in our green activities and take advantage of prizes to be won throughout the week!
Ongoing activities during Green Week:
• Collecting Recycled items. We will be collecting your recyclable items from Monday 7th – Thursday 10th February. Further information about this is below.
• Can Collection Competition. We will be running a Can Competition until 4pm this Thursday (10th February) and offering a prize to the team who collects the most cans. If you would like to enter a team just download the form here. Fill it in and bring it into the Union. Drop off your cans throughout the week up until 4pm on the 10th. Come along to our Karaoke night on Thursday, where we’ll be judging the competition to find out which team collected the most cans during the week.
• Green Pledges. Come to the SU on City Campus and tell us how you intend to reduce your carbon footprint. We’ll make a wall of your green pledges and enter you into a raffle to win a luxury hamper! – (raffle ticket will be drawn on Thurs 10th February at the Union’s Karaoke night).
Monday 7th February:
Recycle your unwanted items!
We will be offering a recycling centre until Thursday (10th February), where you can drop off all your unwanted cans, stamps, ink cartridges, mobile phones, light bulbs and clean, good condition clothes, books and bric-a-brac.
Any books, clothes and bric-a-brac that can be reused will be put forward for our Swap Shop on Wednesday 9th February. Students bringing in items for the Swap Shop will be issued with a voucher to claim an item back at the event on Wednesday.
On top of this, bring in your used batteries and get entered into a prize draw to win a set of rechargeable batteries and a battery charger.
The battery and Swap Shop drop-off (and recycle bins) will be located in the Activities Centre on City Campus.
Tuesday 8th February:

Wednesday 9th February:
Swap Shop
We will be hosting a Swap Shop between 11am-3pm, today, in The Lounge (SU) on City Campus. Bring along your unwanted items and exchange them for something different.
Low Carbon Food Day
As part of our aim to lobby the University to reduce the impact of its catering outlets, we have challenged them to put on a Low Carbon Food Day in all canteens across the University. Why not visit the canteen and sample some low carbon food options in support of our campaign and take a positive step to reduce your carbon footprint.
Green Student Cookbook
If you hate wasting food, don’t throw away left over ingredients – use them to create new dishes! Check out our online Green Cookbook for fun and creative ideas to bring your leftovers back to life! Alternatively, download a new app for your iPhone to help you manage your food more effectively.
Thursday 10th February:
Green Group meeting
If you would like to know more about our environmental development and tell us what you’d like to see us work on in the future, why not pop along to our Green Group meeting between 2-3pm, today, in The Boardroom (SU) on City Campus. Alternatively, get in touch with us for more information.
Karaoke night
Enjoy an evening of karaoke, hosted by your Students’ Union between 7-11pm, in the SU on City Campus. There’ll be a special pre-prepared list of ‘green’ songs with prizes to be won as well as all of your classic karaoke tunes. Entry to this event is free and there’s also select drinks on offer for just £1.50. Come and give it a go, its good fun and you never know, you might just win something!
During the evening, we’ll also be judging the Can Competition to find out which team collected the most cans this week. Plus we’ll be drawing winners for the battery recycling and the green pledge.
Friday 11th February:
Art Attack
We will be hosting an Art Attack, 12-2pm in The Lounge on City Campus, with the recyclable items that you’ve handed in throughout the week. If you remember the TV program, you’ll know what to expect. Come and join your Union Officers as they create a piece of art from items that would normally just be thrown away.
