Deaf awareness
This University specialises in Deaf Studies, BSL Interpreting and Special Needs and Inclusion Studies. We have a substantial Deaf (deaf) population. One in seven people in the UK have some form of hearing loss. The rise in iPods/phones/personal music players, festivals and loud music venues has lead to an increase in hearing issues such as tinnitus.
We should be championing deaf awareness. Students may not be aware of the dangers/implications of playing music too loud. Early intervention can reduce the later risks of hearing loss. A Silent disco is a fun way to promote safe music enjoyment whilst also generating funds toward further deaf research.
We can test the volume of personal music players and have immediate effect on peoples hearing. This will also inform people on how best to communicate with our Deaf students and thus promote better Deaf awareness and respect. Increased participation in Deaf Fest as a result. Increased participation with Sign Language Society. Raising the profile of this university and the deaf community. Estimated impact of 1000+ students hearing and deaf. Early intervention is the best way to promote a future of deaf awareness. We hope to identify possible hearing issues by providing access to hearing tests.
