Black History Month

***We have arranged a number of events and projects for black history month, these can be viewed at  the bottom of this page***

BHM is not just about acknowledging the history of slavery and emancipation; it is a month long celebration of the successes and achievements of black people and people of colour.  It is also a chance of highlighting information and events around black history, culture and achievements.  We will also be holding a series of related events and talks, in addition to highlighting a variety of events taking place across the west midlands.

The West Midlands has the second highest ethnic minority population outside of London.  By highlighting and celebrating Black History we can help to inform people and improve racial tensions and build a better community.

This will impact on all students, staff, and local community and raise the profile of the Union/University.  Societies and local groups will also benefit from the publicity and engagement

For more information and to get involved in this campaign, please contact Ken Harris President.

Black History Trail Exhibition

Black History Trail

David Callaghan presents a Black History Trail Exhibition – a history trail of the West Midlands – The trail is a family friendly guide to Black heritage in the West Midlands and where to find it.

Come and listen to a presentation of the work involved in uncovering the hidden histories of Black people in the West Midlands from the work of the History Detectives - this project is a fascinating research project to uncover the history of black people in the midlands from 1650 to 1918. By recruiting & training 30 local people as 'history detectives' we are slowly peeling back the layers to uncover a fascinating insight into the lives of these hitherto unknown black mainlanders.

The presentation talk starts at 12pm and there will be a chance to ask questions and find out more about the various other heritage projects he is working on.
